Shopify product images not showing: where to look first

Short answer: work out whether the problem is your device, the product, the image file, your theme or an app. Shopify's help center says to rule out your own browser first, then test the same store on a different theme, then remove recently added apps one at a time. Most of these checks take minutes and need no code.

A forum thread from 2025 shows how this goes without a method. A merchant wrote that all their product images had stopped appearing on the product page. Replies asked for the store address and password. When we read the thread, it had no confirmed fix for that case. The checks below are how you avoid that loop.

Step 1: Rule out your own device

Shopify lists these checks for any storefront display problem:

  • Clear your browser cache and cookies.
  • Try a private window, another device, or the Shopify app.
  • Try mobile data or a different internet connection.
  • Make sure your browser is up to date.
  • Check you are not on a VPN or behind a firewall that blocks Shopify.

If the images show on your phone but not your laptop, you are done. If they are missing everywhere, carry on.

Step 2: Check the product itself

Open the product in your Shopify admin. Shopify says to check that the status is Active and that the product is available to the Online Store sales channel in the Publishing section. This is the fix for products that are missing completely. If whole collections are missing, check the collection's sales channels and whether it is in your menus.

If the collection page loads but some products are absent, look at the tag filters in the Filter collection with tags field in your Menus settings. Shopify says stray tags there can hide products.

Then check the images are really attached. Open the product and confirm the media are still listed. Forum helpers also suggest checking that images are assigned to the right variants.

Step 3: Check the image file

If you recently uploaded new images, check them against Shopify's rules for product media:

  • Accepted file types: PNG (best for most images), JPEG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP.
  • Size: up to 5000 x 5000 pixels, or 25 megapixels.
  • File size: under 20 MB.
  • Square images around 2048 x 2048 pixels usually display best.

Shopify also says its image service picks the best format for each visitor's browser automatically.

Step 4: Image shows, but looks wrong

Missing and wrongly displayed are different problems. Shopify says images look off when the image's dimensions or aspect ratio do not match the space the theme gives it. Its list of common cases:

  • Cropped banner or slideshow. The image shape differs from the section. Shopify suggests setting a focal point so the important part stays in frame.
  • Product images not lining up in a collection. Use the same aspect ratio (height to width) for the main image on every product, then upload again.
  • Colours look different. The file may not be in the standard sRGB colour profile. Save it again using your editor's "save for web" option.
  • GIF displays badly in a description. Click the GIF in the rich text editor, choose Edit image, and set the size to Original size.
  • Logo looks tiny. Whitespace around the logo in the file can shrink it. Crop the file tightly.

The forum's own summary of that thread also mentions one narrow case: a merchant on a theme called Savor had images showing as thin strips in a featured collection section, and the reported fix was a line of custom CSS. That is one theme, so do not copy it without testing.

Step 5: Test on a different theme

If the images still fail everywhere, Shopify suggests installing a fresh copy of your theme, or a free Shopify theme, and checking again. How to read the result:

  • Fine on the other theme, broken on yours: the cause is in your theme's code or settings.
  • Broken on every theme: look at admin settings and apps.

Do this on a copy, not your live theme.

Step 6: Remove recent apps one at a time

Shopify says to temporarily uninstall an app you recently installed or updated if it affects the storefront. If the problem disappears, contact that app's support. If not, the app was not the cause. Apps that add image galleries, zoom, lazy loading or swatches are the usual suspects, but that is our guess, not Shopify's statement.

Step 7: Look at theme code

If it only fails on your current theme and you know which file was changed, the code editor's Timeline view lets you restore an earlier version of that file. Shopify warns that restoring replaces the whole file, so copy the current contents somewhere safe first. Forum replies also suggest opening your browser's developer tools and looking for 404 or 403 errors on the image files, which tells you whether the images are being blocked or are not being found.

When to hire help

Get help if the images are missing across the store, the fix needs theme code, or you cannot tell whether a theme edit or an app caused it. Editing product template files blind can break the page, and a missing product photo costs you sales every hour.

We check your settings first and tell you what we found. A single clear defect is a fixed $299 fix, with the $99 diagnosis credited toward it. Small content changes such as replacing a few broken images are $49 flat and you only pay if it is fixed. Anything bigger gets a written quote first. We never ask for your password: tell us what is happening. Send the store address, an example product and what you see.
