Shopify payment method not showing at checkout: where to look

Short answer: go to Settings, then Payments in your Shopify admin and check two places. First, is there an active primary payment provider for cards? Second, is the method that is missing listed under Additional payment methods, and is it fully activated? Shopify says a method that is only installed or half set up does not appear at checkout until it is configured and activated.

Shopify's help pages on this are short and split across several topics, and they do not tell you why one specific method is missing. We read the troubleshooting and activation pages in full. They support the checks below. Anything beyond them we label as our own suggestion.

Step 1: do you have a primary payment provider?

If checkout shows a message like "This store is currently unable to accept payments", Shopify says the store likely has no active primary payment provider. The primary provider processes credit and debit card payments. Shopify is clear that additional methods such as PayPal handle only their own payments and do not replace a primary provider.

So if the problem is that no cards can be used at all, or the whole payment step is empty, this is the first thing to fix. Add a primary provider in the Shopify admin. If Shopify Payments is not available for your store's country or region, Shopify says to set up a third-party payment gateway as the primary provider.

Step 2: look at the Additional payment methods section

Settings, then Payments, then the Additional payment methods section. This is where PayPal Express Checkout, buy now pay later services and regional payment methods live, and Shopify says they are separate from the credit card provider. A missing PayPal button, for example, will not be fixed by anything you do to your card provider.

Check that the method is listed. If it is not, click Add payment methods, search by payment method or by provider, choose the provider from the results and click Activate. Enter your account details for the provider and click Activate again. Shopify says that once activated, customers can use it at checkout.

Step 3: an installed app is not an active method

Some methods are installed as apps. Shopify says you have to configure and then activate these apps before you can use them. The steps are:

  1. Settings, then Payments, then Add payment methods.
  2. Find the provider and click Activate.
  3. Click Manage. This takes you into the provider's own app, where you connect your external account.
  4. When configuration is done, click Activate.

If you installed the app and stopped at the install step, this is the likely reason for the missing method. Shopify's wording is that after you activate the app, the payment method is visible on checkout.

Step 4: a third-party gateway that will not connect

If your primary provider is a third-party gateway, Shopify lists these checks:

  • Check the account credentials. Most gateways need an account ID and a password or security key. Shopify says wrong values cause many problems.
  • Check for extra setup steps on the provider's own page.
  • Contact the gateway. Most of the gateway's settings live in the gateway account, not in Shopify. Ask them to confirm the settings are right for connecting to your Shopify account and that any test mode setting has been turned off.

Test mode left on is the sort of mistake that makes payment options look broken, so ask about it directly.

Step 5: Shopify Payments problems

If you use Shopify Payments, Shopify points to three things: the information requirements if you cannot connect your bank account, the Shopify status page to rule out an outage, and the banner on the home page of your Shopify admin if the account is on hold. Shopify adds that the store owner should check their email for the message.

Step 6: wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay

Shopify does not explain these on the pages we read. It links to separate Apple Pay and Google Pay troubleshooting pages, and does the same for Amazon Pay, Authorize.net, iDEAL | Wero and PayPal. If the missing method is one of those, go to that provider's section of Shopify's help. We have not read those pages, so we do not state what is needed for each.

Step 7: test as a customer

Open a private browser window, add a product, and go through checkout to the payment step. Some methods may behave differently by country, currency or device. We have not found Shopify guidance on this in the pages we read, so test with the same kind of address and device your customer used. Take a screenshot of what you see.

Contact the provider from inside Shopify

Shopify gives a direct route: Settings, then Payments, choose the provider (click Manage for the card provider, or the provider name for additional methods), then More actions, then Contact provider, write your message and send. For ActiveMerchant providers, support is on their website or the link in their About section.

When to hire help

Ask for help when the settings all look right but the method still does not appear, when a third-party gateway keeps failing, or when you are losing sales and cannot afford to experiment. Send us the store address, the name of the method that is missing, and a screenshot of your Settings, Payments page. Leave out account numbers and keys. We will tell you what we found and agree the price first. One defined defect is a fixed $299, with the $99 diagnosis credited. Larger work gets a written quote. We never ask for your password: tell us what is happening.
