Shopify discount code not working: match the error to the fix

Short answer: a code that "does not work" is usually working as it was set up, just not as you meant. Shopify shows different messages for different problems, and each one points at a different setting. Find the message your customer sees, then check the matching setting below. If you do not have the message, ask the customer for a screenshot. Guessing wastes time.

What each message means

These are the messages Shopify's discount FAQ lists:

  • "Enter a valid discount code": the code does not exist or is not currently active.
  • "[CODE] discount code isn't valid for the items in your cart": the code exists but does not apply to the products in the cart.
  • "The [CODE] discount code has already been used": the customer cannot reuse it. If no matching order exists, an unfinished checkout is still holding the code.
  • "Some discount codes couldn't be used together. We applied the best combination": the customer entered more than one code and they cannot be combined.
  • No discount box at all: the code field is not showing. That is not an error message, so see its own section.

"Enter a valid discount code"

Open the discount in your admin and check:

  • The exact spelling of the code. Shopify also says to avoid special characters in the code name, so the code is added correctly to the checkout URL.
  • The status is active.
  • The start and end date. Shopify says a discount with an end date expires at the end time you set, using the timezone shown in your admin. A sale meant to run "until Sunday" can stop early if the end time says 12:00 AM. The same applies to the start time.
  • Rollouts. Shopify says a rollout can activate or deactivate a discount for the customers in it, and the discount's details page shows the effective status. If you use rollouts, check that the customer is in scope.

"Isn't valid for the items in your cart"

The code exists and the cart does not match. Check what the discount applies to, such as products, collections or variants. Shopify's discount codes page lists what you can set on a code: the dates, how many times it can be used, a minimum order amount, which products, collections or variants it applies to, and whether it combines with other discounts. Some details that catch people:

  • A discount code can apply to up to 100 specific customers, products and variants. Go over that and Shopify shows the error "Item entitlements exceeded max number".
  • Product specific codes apply to all quantities of that product in the cart unless you set the discount to apply once per order.

Recreate the customer's exact cart instead of testing a rough version. Many "bugs" vanish once you use the same items and quantities.

"Has already been used"

Shopify explains this one. When someone submits an order, the code is held against its usage limit until payment completes or fails. A declined payment releases the hold and the customer can use the code again. The hold remains only when the checkout never finishes. What to do:

  1. Go to Orders and search for the customer. If an order exists, the code was used.
  2. If no order exists, create a new code with the same conditions and send it to the customer. Shopify says deactivating and reactivating a code, or renaming it, does not reset its usage history, but a new code has its own.

Related detail from Shopify: if a code is limited to one use per customer and you delete it and make a duplicate with the same limit, customers who used the old one can use the new one once.

No discount box at checkout

Shopify lists the reasons the code field may not show:

  • You have no active discount codes.
  • The checkout came from a draft order invoice or link. Customers cannot apply codes there by default.
  • The customer is using Shop Pay and has not logged in to their Shop Pay account yet.
  • A third party app that affects product pricing or changes checkout behaviour hides it.

Combining codes

Discounts can be set up to combine, when the cart meets your conditions. If a customer enters codes that cannot be combined, Shopify shows the "best combination" message above and applies the best one, so a code can look ignored when another won. Check the combination settings on each discount.

Other limits worth knowing

  • You can edit most settings on an existing discount, but not the discount type. If you need a different type, create a new discount.
  • Discount codes cannot be applied on the post-purchase page at checkout, and a code applied at checkout will not apply to post-purchase offers.
  • Most discounts cannot be applied to gift cards. The exception is a product specific discount where the product is a gift card.
  • Customers can use codes on all your sales channels, and you cannot restrict a code to a single channel.
  • If you need to reject a code based on the order's contents, Shopify says that needs a third party or custom app.

A quick test routine

This is general practice, not a Shopify instruction. Open a private window, add the exact products, enter the code with no extra spaces, and test as a guest and as a logged in customer, once on a phone. If it works there, the issue is in the customer's cart, account or an old link. If it fails there, look at the discount settings or at an app.

When to hire help

Get a developer if the code box is missing and you cannot find an app responsible, if codes behave differently with a custom checkout or discount app, or if you need a rule Shopify's settings cannot express. Tidewell diagnoses and fixes discount and checkout problems on Shopify stores. We tell you what we find first and agree a price before doing any work. Send us the store address, the discount code name and the exact message: tell us what is happening. We never ask for your password.

Questions

Can I show discounted prices on product pages?

Shopify says discounts apply in the cart and checkout. To show crossed out prices on product and collection pages you need a third party app or custom work. Compare-at pricing is separate.

Can I stop a code being used by one customer twice?

Yes. Shopify lets you limit the total uses and set one use per customer.

Does editing the code reset who used it?

No. Shopify says deactivating, reactivating or renaming does not reset usage history.
