"Talk about your brand" is the default heading of the Rich text section in Shopify's starter theme and in the Simple theme. The text under it starts "Use this text to share information about your brand with your customers." If you see it on your store, you haven't replaced that section yet. Open the theme editor, find the section, and either write your own words or remove it.
Last reviewed against Shopify's help center on 9 October 2026. Menu labels vary a little between themes.
In Shopify's starter-theme code the Rich text section has two default settings. The Heading is "Talk about your brand". The Text is "Use this text to share information about your brand with your customers. Describe a product, share announcements, or welcome customers to your store." Your theme may word it a little differently.
It's easy to get stuck, because you can't click the text on the live store. In an October 2021 Community thread, an owner couldn't work out where to edit it. The answer was a section in the theme editor.
1. Open the editor. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then Themes, and click Edit theme next to your live theme. (Older versions of the admin say Customize.) The editor opens on your home page.
2. Find the section. Click through the sections in the left sidebar. In the Simple theme it's named Rich text, and other themes may name it differently. Click it and you'll see Heading and Text boxes on the right.
3. Change it or remove it. Type your own heading and text, or click Remove section at the bottom of the section's settings, then Save. If you're editing your live theme, click Publish too. Shopify's help center gives the same remove steps.
4. Look on other templates. Use the drop-down at the top of the editor to switch from Home page to Products, Collections, Pages and the rest. A section on one template doesn't show on the others, so check each.
5. Open the header and footer. These areas are shared by every page and are collapsed by default in the sidebar, so click the button beside them to see what's inside. Custom Liquid blocks and apps can add text here too.
6. Check the live store. Open it in a private window, press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) and search for "Talk about your brand" and for "Use this text". Make sure you edited the theme marked as current in Online Store, Themes. It's easy to tidy a copy while the live theme keeps the old text.
Before you change anything, duplicate your theme from Online Store, Themes. Shopify recommends this too, so you can discard changes and start again.
If the text is on the live store but isn't in any section, it may sit in a page's own content. In your admin, go to Online Store, then Pages, open the page and read the body. A blog post or product description can hold it too. It can also come from an app block or a Custom Liquid block. Those are the places to look, based on how Shopify stores content. We can't tell which one applies to your store without seeing it.
Two or three plain sentences are enough. Say who makes or sells the products, where you're based if you want to say, and what a shopper should know before buying. Only write what is true, and keep the same facts on your About page and your policy pages.
We can't put a number on lost sales and we won't guess. The cost is in what a shopper concludes. A home page that still says "Talk about your brand" reads as a store that was never finished, and people deciding whether to enter card details look for signs of that. Search engines can read it, since it's live text on a public page. Searching your own domain for it, for example site:yourstore.com "Talk about your brand", shows whether it's been picked up.
Has my store been hacked?
If the wording matches the default above, it's theme text that was never replaced.
Can I delete the section?
Yes. Click it in the editor, choose Remove section and save. Your home page works without it.
Why can't I find it in the editor?
It may be on another template, in the header or footer, in a page's content, or in an app block. Work through steps 4 and 5, then check the Pages section of your admin.
I use a different theme. Do these steps still apply?
The idea does. Menu labels and default wording vary by theme, so look for any text section you haven't edited and search the live page for the sentence.
Does leaving it up do any harm?
It won't break anything. It does tell visitors the store isn't finished.
